2015 Ford Explorer SYNC & MyFord Touch Problems

Help with frozen displays, Bluetooth pairing, phone audio and touchscreen issues in the 2015 Explorer.

Before following this guide

Confirm the vehicle's engine, trim, drivetrain, market and equipment. The exact procedure may differ, even within the same model year.

Identify the installed system

Some 2015 Explorers have SYNC with a smaller display and others have the MyFord Touch touchscreen. Menus, reset options and available features differ by vehicle and option package. Identify the screen and system version before using instructions from another Ford model year.

Frozen or slow touchscreen

Note whether audio, climate controls and the backup camera still function. Restarting the system or allowing the vehicle to shut down completely may clear a temporary software issue; repeated freezing warrants checking power, software version, connected devices and service information. Avoid disconnecting the battery solely to erase a fault before documenting the symptoms.

Bluetooth pairing problems

Delete stale pairings from the phone and vehicle only after recording any settings you want to keep. Verify Bluetooth is enabled and the phone is compatible, then pair according to the screen prompts. Try another phone to distinguish a handset problem from the vehicle system. Ford’s manual includes phone-specific troubleshooting tables.

Phonebook or audio does not work

Check phone permissions for contacts and media, media-source selection, volume and whether another paired device has taken priority. Some modern phone features are not supported by older SYNC software. A working Bluetooth phone call does not necessarily prove that media streaming settings are correct.

USB and navigation troubleshooting

Test with a known-good cable and device. Check the USB port for damage and verify the device is using a supported media mode. Navigation availability depends on installed equipment; missing maps or an unavailable online service are not automatically evidence of a failed display module.

Before updating software

Identify the vehicle VIN, installed SYNC generation and current software version. Follow Ford’s published update process for that exact system, maintain adequate vehicle power and do not load firmware intended for SYNC 3 or a different model. Keep a record of the symptoms and version before the update.

When professional diagnosis makes sense

Repeated blackouts, loss of several modules, water damage, blown fuses or unexplained battery drain deserve electrical testing. A shop can inspect module communication, supply voltage, grounds and stored faults before quoting a replacement screen.

Preserve settings before a system reset

Before performing any reset, note paired phones, radio presets and navigation or account settings that could be lost. Start with simple checks such as phone restart, cable replacement, Bluetooth pairing and whether the system responds to steering-wheel controls. Follow Ford instructions for the exact infotainment version.

After a replacement module or software update

Replacing the display or related module may require configuration rather than simple plug-and-play installation. Confirm compatibility by VIN, check available official software guidance and test audio, backup camera, voice controls and phone calls. Avoid downloading unofficial firmware packages from unknown websites.

Troubleshooting without losing saved information

Start by documenting whether the issue affects Bluetooth, media, navigation, the touchscreen or all audio functions. Check the phone’s software and pairing permissions before assuming the vehicle module has failed. If a reboot or system reset is appropriate, review Ford’s instructions and note that some reset functions delete paired devices and saved preferences. A completely dark screen, repeated fuse failure or loss of multiple accessories may justify electrical testing. Keep the vehicle parked while troubleshooting the display rather than navigating menus while driving.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
