2015 Ford Explorer Backup Camera Problems

Troubleshoot black screens, intermittent images, guideline issues and camera lens problems.

Before following this guide

Confirm the vehicle's engine, trim, drivetrain, market and equipment. The exact procedure may differ, even within the same model year.

What should happen in Reverse

On an equipped 2015 Explorer, selecting Reverse normally brings up the rearview camera image. The manual cautions that camera features may not appear when the liftgate is ajar and that a display showing an image outside Reverse needs inspection. Use mirrors and direct observation even when the image looks normal.

Black screen or no image

First determine whether the whole display is unresponsive or only the camera feed is missing. Check whether Reverse is being recognized, whether the liftgate is fully shut, and whether other touchscreen functions operate. A blank screen does not by itself prove the camera unit failed.

Intermittent or distorted picture

A picture that cuts out when the liftgate moves may warrant inspecting wiring and connector condition in the liftgate harness. Moisture, corrosion, physical damage and display/module faults are other possibilities. Do not cut or probe harness wires without the appropriate Ford wiring diagram and electrical testing procedure.

Fog, dirt and low-light performance

Gently clean the camera lens with a soft lint-free cloth and non-abrasive cleaner. Ford notes that mud, water or debris on the lens and failed reversing lamps can impair the image, particularly at night. A damaged rear bumper or liftgate can change the camera aim.

Missing parking guidelines

Guideline behaviour can depend on selected settings, steering information, trailer connection and equipment. Check the vehicle menu when stationary before assuming a component is faulty. The image is only an aid; people and objects can be outside the field of view.

Safety and repair checks

If the image is missing, use careful direct observation and extra assistance as needed when reversing. Before replacing parts, verify power, ground, wiring continuity, module communication and applicable service notices; confirm the exact camera part using the VIN.

After a repair

Test in a safe open area, confirm the correct view appears only as expected, and check image orientation, clarity and guidelines. If bodywork or camera mounting changed, verify aiming and coverage before relying on the system.

Distinguishing the screen from the camera

Check whether the display responds to radio, climate and menu controls when the camera is blank. If the whole screen freezes, begin with the SYNC display and power supply diagnosis; if only the reversing image fails, inspect the camera circuit and liftgate wiring. Note whether the failure is intermittent, temperature-related or triggered by opening the liftgate.

Why part numbers need confirmation

Appearance alone is not a reliable way to identify replacement camera modules. Connector styles, features and software configurations can differ. Use the VIN, the module label and current Ford service information, then test image alignment and any guidelines after replacement.

Checking whether the problem is screen or camera

If the infotainment display works normally except in reverse, the camera circuit or tailgate wiring deserves attention. If the entire screen freezes or stays black, start with the infotainment system diagnosis. Note whether opening or moving the liftgate changes the picture, which can help locate intermittent wiring damage. Do not rely on a distorted or missing image while reversing.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
