2015 Ford Explorer XLT Features & Equipment

A closer look at 2015 Explorer XLT features, engine choices, packages and what to check on a used XLT

Before following this guide

Confirm the vehicle's engine, trim, drivetrain, market and equipment. The exact procedure may differ, even within the same model year.

U.S. 2015 model-year specifications. Options, market, installed equipment and vehicle labels take precedence.

Why we focus on the XLT

A friend’s Tuxedo Black Metallic 2015 Explorer XLT with the naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 inspired this site. That makes the XLT our starting point, while the guides remain relevant to all 2015 Explorer trims. The colour and trim tell you something about the car, but do not prove exactly which options were ordered.

The familiar 3.5L V6

The naturally aspirated 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 produces a brochure-rated 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. It was a common engine choice. The 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder was available in compatible front-wheel-drive configurations, and is not an AWD engine option in the 2015 retail brochure. Verify which engine is fitted before using oil specifications or investigating mechanical problems.

What the XLT includes

Ford lists XLT-specific equipment such as the SecuriCode keypad, reverse sensing system, silver roof rails, heated side mirrors with LED turn indicators and an upgraded grille. Those features distinguish it from a basic Explorer. Verify whether the rear camera, large infotainment screen and heated seats are fitted, as they vary by equipment group.

Equipment Group 201A

The brochure’s 201A group adds the Driver Connect Package, MyFord Touch with an eight-inch centre display and associated screens, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded audio and a rear-view camera. This matters when replacing a display, diagnosing a failed camera or using instructions written for a different dashboard.

Equipment Group 202A and appearance package

Group 202A adds 201A equipment plus the Comfort Package, including heated leather-trimmed front seats and powered adjustments. The XLT Appearance Package is another separate configuration with distinctive 20-inch wheels and exterior/interior changes. Do not assume 20-inch tires fit a particular XLT without checking the vehicle label.

FWD, AWD and towing are separate questions

A 3.5L XLT can be front-wheel drive or Intelligent 4WD depending on configuration. A hitch alone does not establish a 5,000-lb towing rating. Ford’s maximum 5,000-lb rating is conditional on appropriate equipment, including its Heavy-Duty/Class III Trailer Tow Package. See the towing guide before hitching up.

An XLT used-car inspection

Check coolant level and engine oil condition, signs of water pump trouble, AWD PTU leaks if equipped, transmission shifts, tires, brakes, electronic screens, climate operation and all stored diagnostic codes. Ask for service records and recall completion status. These checks help establish condition but cannot replace a pre-purchase mechanical inspection.

Service information for our featured model

The featured 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 uses SAE 5W-20 oil, and Ford lists 6.0 US quarts (5.7 litres) for an oil-and-filter refill. Confirm the engine on any other XLT, as a badge is not a substitute for engine identification.

What to verify on a used XLT

Test both front and rear HVAC, all window switches, power locks, seat adjustments and infotainment connections. Confirm tire size and pressure label, engine, drivetrain and tow-package equipment. A seller may describe equipment that was available on an XLT but not actually installed on that particular vehicle.

For the featured 3.5L V6 XLT

The friend’s Explorer behind this site has the naturally aspirated 3.5L V6, so routine maintenance should start with that engine’s oil grade, cooling-system service and correct plug selection. Whether it is front-wheel drive or AWD still matters for PTU-related diagnosis, towing configuration and tire matching; the XLT badge alone cannot answer those questions.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
