2015 Ford Explorer Key Fob Battery & Programming

Replace remote batteries, identify intelligent-access differences and troubleshoot key recognition.

Before following this guide

Confirm the vehicle's engine, trim, drivetrain, market and equipment. The exact procedure may differ, even within the same model year.

Which remote do you have?

The 2015 Explorer may use a conventional remote-head key or an Intelligent Access remote depending on equipment. The cases and opening methods differ. Identify the exact remote before prying on it, and compare its internal battery marking with the owner’s manual.

Battery type and safe handling

Ford specifies a CR2032 three-volt coin cell for the key-fob battery procedure in the 2015 manual. Coin cells are dangerous if swallowed; keep loose and used batteries away from children and pets and seek urgent medical attention for suspected ingestion. Do not short-circuit a battery with metal tools.

Changing the battery

Use the method shown for your style of remote to release the emergency key or open the case. Note the installed cell orientation before removing it. Install a fresh battery of the specified type without bending contacts; snap the case together and test every button near the vehicle.

If the remote still fails

Try a verified fresh battery, inspect the contacts and case, and test the backup remote if available. Vehicle battery condition, radio interference, remote damage and an immobilizer issue can also prevent recognition. A new key-fob battery does not automatically require vehicle reprogramming.

Adding a new programmed key

The process for adding keys depends on whether the vehicle has enough functioning programmed keys and on its Intelligent Access equipment. Follow the exact 2015 owner’s manual security procedure. Where the prerequisites are not met, a dealer or properly equipped automotive locksmith may be required.

Record key details

Keep the second working key in a safe place and avoid leaving the backup remote inside the vehicle. If buying a used Explorer with only one key, confirm the correct programmed-key replacement procedure and cost before the remaining key is lost.

Battery replacement versus remote programming

A weak coin-cell battery and a lost programmed key are different problems. Replacing the battery generally does not require reprogramming an otherwise working remote. If the vehicle no longer recognizes the key after replacement, check battery orientation, contacts and the backup starting method before paying for key programming.

Protecting a working spare key

Before opening a remote, confirm you have another functioning key and record how the shell fits together. Do not bend the small metal contacts. Dispose of used coin cells safely and keep new and used batteries away from children and pets because ingestion is dangerous.

When replacing the coin cell does not restore function

Confirm battery polarity, contact cleanliness and that the case closes properly. Test a spare remote to distinguish a key issue from a vehicle receiver or programming issue. If both keys stop responding together, consider the vehicle battery or electrical faults as well. Intelligent Access programming is not equivalent to a simple battery replacement.

When a new battery does not restore operation

Confirm the correct battery type and polarity for the exact key design, and avoid bending internal contacts when opening the case. If buttons still fail, try the spare key and inspect the remote shell for physical or moisture damage. A no-start condition might be related to the vehicle battery, key detection or immobilizer rather than the coin cell. Programming an additional key is a different task from replacing a battery and may require already programmed keys or dealer equipment. Keep the emergency key and backup starting procedure available.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
