2015 Ford Explorer Headlight & Taillight Bulb Guide
Lighting identification, replacement precautions and troubleshooting for 2015 Explorer equipment.
Confirm the vehicle's engine, trim, drivetrain, market and equipment. The exact procedure may differ, even within the same model year.
Examples from 2013–2015 Explorer bulb fitment (confirm equipment)
| Lamp / assembly | Listed fitment | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Composite halogen headlamp | 9005 | Verify headlamp assembly |
| Factory HID headlamp | D3S | High-voltage lamp; professional service advised |
| Fog lamp, if equipped | H11 55W | Verify installed equipment |
| Rear amber turn, applicable assembly | 7440NA | Confirm housing and original bulb |

Identify the lamp assembly first
2015 Explorers have equipment-dependent headlamp and exterior lamp configurations. Do not assume a single replacement bulb fits every trim or a lamp assembly that has been changed since the vehicle was built. Check the Ford manual’s bulb chart and physically identify the installed lamp before purchasing.
Before replacing a bulb
Switch off the lights and ignition, allow the housing to cool and protect painted surfaces. Some lamp assemblies contain high-voltage discharge components or require more extensive access; refer that work to a qualified technician. Never touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers.
A lamp does not light: what to inspect
Check the other lamp on the same circuit, the bulb and socket condition, moisture inside the lens, visible wiring damage and the relevant fuse. If a new lamp still does not work, test for power and ground using a suitable wiring diagram; repeated fuse failures indicate a fault, not a need for a larger fuse.
LED and high-intensity equipment
Some features use integrated LEDs or equipment that is not serviced as a simple bulb swap. Find out whether the problem is an external bulb, ballast/driver, wiring, or an entire assembly. Avoid universal LED conversions that compromise beam pattern or legal compliance.
After a replacement
Verify low and high beams where equipped, parking lamps, brake lamps, turn signals, reverse lamps and rear license-plate lighting. If a headlamp housing was disturbed, inspect its alignment according to Ford’s aiming instructions. A bright lamp aimed incorrectly can reduce visibility and glare other drivers.
Water inside the housing
Persistent condensation, droplets or corrosion inside a lamp may indicate damage or a blocked vent. Drying out or replacing the bulb does not necessarily correct water ingress. Investigate the seal or assembly before moisture destroys electrical connectors.
Before ordering replacement lamps
The 2015 Explorer was offered with different lighting equipment, including configurations that may use high-intensity-discharge components. Confirm the installed headlamp assembly, bulb marking and VIN-based parts listing before ordering. A generic online bulb chart may combine trim levels or mistake a daytime running lamp for the low beam.
Moisture in the housing versus a failed bulb
Light surface condensation that clears can be different from standing water, persistent fogging or a corroded connector. Inspect seals, rear access covers and signs of impact. If a fuse repeatedly opens, stop replacing it and have the circuit checked for a short rather than installing a higher-rated fuse.
Halogen versus HID headlamps
The 2015 Explorer could be equipped with different headlamp systems. Look at the actual lamp assembly and equipment information before ordering; a bulb listed for a halogen unit should not be assumed to fit a factory HID unit. High-voltage HID hardware calls for special safety precautions. If you cannot identify the assembly, use a VIN-specific Ford parts lookup or ask a professional shop to verify it.
Diagnosing a dark lamp without guessing
First determine whether only one lamp is out, both sides are out, or other exterior lighting is affected. One failed lamp can suggest a bulb or connection; both sides failing together merits checking controls, wiring and relevant fuses. Examine the housing for water ingress and damaged sockets. A new bulb that fails rapidly may be a symptom of moisture or an electrical problem, not bad luck.
Verify the headlamp assembly, not just the trim badge
The Explorer was sold with different headlamp equipment. Do not order an inexpensive halogen bulb solely from a generic size chart if the vehicle has a factory HID or another assembly. Check the vehicle’s VIN-based Ford parts information, the visible headlamp marking and the 2015 owner’s manual before making a purchase. Keep hands away from energized HID components and seek qualified service for high-voltage systems. Rear lighting, license-plate lighting and auxiliary lamps may also differ by equipment; inspect the failed lamp and its socket before ordering.
Identifying a factory HID headlamp
Check the lamp assembly and original equipment documentation before ordering a bulb. Factory HID systems have high-voltage components, and the appearance of an aftermarket LED conversion does not prove the original lamp type. Switch the lamps off before inspection, avoid handling exposed lamp wiring, and have a qualified technician service components when the correct procedure is uncertain.
Identify the headlamp before buying a bulb
The 2015 Explorer was available with different headlamp assemblies. Philips’ fitment guide lists a 9005 bulb for the composite halogen headlamp and a D3S discharge lamp for the HID version. Do not fit a halogen replacement in an HID assembly, and do not assume a later Explorer uses the same light. Check the actual housing and VIN before ordering.
Other exterior lamps
The Philips replacement guide lists an H11 55-watt front fog lamp for applicable 2013–2015 Explorers. It also lists 7440NA for a rear amber turn signal in applicable equipment. Other lamps may use sealed LED units or vary by assembly; do not order a complete set from an unverified generic bulb chart.
Diagnose before replacing
If both headlights are dark, investigate switches, fuses, wiring and control modules before assuming two simultaneous bulb failures. If only one is dark, compare the working side and inspect the connector for heat or corrosion. HID lighting contains high voltage: switch off the lights and follow the service procedure, or have a qualified technician handle it.
After replacement
Keep fingers off the new bulb glass, ensure the sealing cap seats properly and verify low beams, high beams, indicators and marker lights as applicable. Inspect for condensation or damaged seals. Aim the headlamps if the assembly has been disturbed and test at night in a safe location.
Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
